Tis The Season For A Healthy Smile

As Buddy the Elf in the Christmas movie Elf says, “I just like to smile. Smiling’s my favorite!” We love to smile too, and we want to make sure you remain smiling this holiday season. The holidays are a great time to see family and friends. It is easy to get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and forget to take proper care of your oral health. We want to share some tips to ensure that your smile remains shiny and bright.

Be mindful of the sweets you consume

With all of the candy canes, gingerbread houses, chocolate coins, and delicious desserts that are available at the holidays, it is easy to overindulge your sweet tooth. When sugar sits on your teeth, it can lead to the development of plaque, causing tooth decay.

Limit alcohol consumption

Spiked eggnog, a chocolate martini, or glass of champagne are all delicious treats to be enjoyed with family and friends—in moderation, as alcohol also has a high sugar content. After consuming alcohol, it is a great idea to drink a glass of water to wash away cavity-forming bacteria.

Offer Healthy Treats

Along with the sugary desserts, it is important to also have a variety of nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables. Crunchy vegetables are an extra way to help keep teeth a little cleaner.

Brush and Floss Carefully

Be sure to brush all areas of the teeth, including the front, back, and tops of the teeth. It is also important not to forget the tongue, gumline, cheeks, and roof of the mouth. Be sure to brush at a 45 degree angle, using circular motions. Spending extra time flossing to be sure that all leftover food and bacteria is removed is important.
